Troubleshooting: "This Change Is Not Allowed on This Page"

A Client Editor may see this message when saving:

Updating failed. This change is not allowed on this page: Adding, removing, moving or converting elements is not allowed.

This means Client Edit Mode is doing its job — the save contained a change that is not permitted. Use this guide to find out whether the block was really off limits, or whether a permission needs adjusting.

Common causes

The client changed the structure of the page

Adding, removing, moving or converting elements is always locked. The client should only change the text, images or links inside existing elements. Ask them to undo the structural change and save again.

The client changed something a permission does not allow

Check the permissions for the page:

1. Go to Client Edit → Protected Pages and click Permissions next to the page.
2. Under Page defaults, check whether Text, Images and Links are allowed.
3. Under Per-user overrides, check whether this user was set to Deny for a category.
4. Change the setting if needed and click Save permissions.

A block was added after the page was protected

Blocks added later have no ID yet and are read-only for Client Editors. Press Re-sync IDs on the Protected Pages screen. See A Block I Added Later Is Not Editable.

See what was blocked

Go to Client Edit → Overview. The Recent activity log lists every Change blocked with the user, page and time, so you can see exactly what the client tried.
